Blaxicans & the Future of Multicultural Identity
The Blaxicans of Los Angeles project is centered on understanding the limitations and prospects of multiracial identity in Los Angeles through the lens of Blaxicans (Black-Mexicans). Walter seeks to understand the impacts of Blaxicans on black and brown race relations and the prospects for solidarity and racial and political coalitions in, arguably, one the of most divisive political moments in this nation's history.
At a time when race and multiracial identification continues to grow throughout the U.S., Walter answers, what is the role of Blaxicans in an increasingly multiracial and multi-ethnic city and country? Walter Thompson-Hernandez is a Los Angeles-based multimedia journalist, a recent graduate from Stanford University with a degree in Latin American studies, and a current doctoral student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
As a journalist, Walter has covered issues related to race, identity, popular culture, and music in the United States, Cuba, Mexico, and Belgium. His work can be found on NPR, CNN, BBC, Fusion, Los Angeles Times, Remezcla, and Huffington Post, among others.
